African Copper’s H1 output rises
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – London- and Botswana-listed copper production and exploration company African Copper has reported higher production volumes for the first half of its 2014 financial year.
The group processed 373 274 metric tonnes (Mt) of ore, producing 4 937 Mt of copper in concentrate for the six months ended September 30, compared with the 421 930 Mt of ore processed and copper output of 4 490 Mt in the interim period in the previous financial year.
Ore processed at the company’s Mowana and Thakadu mines during the three months to September 30, amounted to 192 041 Mt, compared with the 181 233 Mt of ore processed in the first quarter. This was, however, lower than the 250 022 Mt of processed in the second quarter of the previous financial year.
Poor mining contractor perfromance at Thakadu had resulted in decreased sulphide ore supply to the process plant and increased oxide ore treatment, the company stated. Copper recovery decreased to 60.4% in the second quarter of the 2014 financial year, from 83.6% in the first quarter, and 63.4% in the second quarter of the previous financial year.
Further, plant downtime had impacted on the amount of ore processed following the installation of a new primary crusher in July and repairs to the ball mill motor in August and September.
“We continue to focus on improving plant efficiency and increasing throughput to raise production levels further towards capacity. Our progress continues," acting CEO Jordan Soko said.
