AfDB’s Adesina starts South Africa visit

African Development Bank Group president Dr Akinwumi Adesina and President Cyril Ramaphosa
African Development Bank (AfDB) Group president Dr Akinwumi Adesina has started a three-day official visit to South Africa.
He will meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as various other government and industry leaders, to discuss important global and regional concerns, the AfDB’s development agenda and South Africa’s potential for increased trade and investment with the rest of Africa.
Adesina will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of this year's South Africa Investment Conference, which will convene both local and global delegates, on March 24. The aim of the event is to showcase the investment opportunities available in the country.
Further, Adesina will be the keynote speaker on March 25 ahead of a panel discussion organised by the African chapter of the Ambrosetti CEO Community. The topic of the keynote will be “Africa beyond Covid-19: a new era of opportunity”.
In Johannesburg, Adesina will also meet with G7 ambassadors accredited to South Africa. One of the key subjects of discussion will be the just energy transition agenda for South Africa.
Senior officials of the AfDB are joining Adesina in South Africa for his visit. These include AfDB senior VP Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala; private sector, infrastructure and industrialisation VP Solomon Quaynor; regional development, integration and business delivery acting VP Yacine Fal; power, energy, climate and green growth VP Kevin Kariuki; and Southern Africa region director-general Leila Mokaddem.
The AfDB’s active portfolio in South Africa comprises 23 operations with a total commitment of about $4.5-billion in financing.
Since 1997, the AfDB has invested nearly $7-billion in energy and infrastructure in South Africa.
