Water And Sanitation

Water and sanitation is a critical infrastructure sector encompassing the provision of clean drinking water, wastewater treatment, and sanitation services to communities and industries. The sector includes the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of water supply systems, sewage networks, treatment plants, and related facilities. Water and sanitation services are essential for public health, economic development, and environmental sustainability, preventing waterborne diseases and supporting industrial and agricultural activities. In many African countries, the sector faces significant challenges including aging infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, water scarcity, and funding constraints. Governments typically regulate water and sanitation through dedicated departments or ministries, setting quality standards, tariffs, and service delivery targets. The sector attracts investment from both public and private sources, with increasing emphasis on public-private partnerships to improve service coverage and efficiency. Water security—ensuring reliable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water—has become a strategic priority for governments and businesses alike. Climate change, population growth, and competing demands from agriculture, industry, and domestic users intensify pressure on water resources and sanitation infrastructure. The sector is closely linked to broader development goals, including poverty reduction, food security, and environmental protection. Technological advances in water treatment, desalination, and wastewater recycling are expanding options for sustainable water management.
