Vaccines

Vaccines are biological preparations that provide active acquired immunity to particular infectious diseases. They typically contain an agent resembling a disease-causing microorganism, often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins, which stimulates the body's immune system to recognise the agent as a threat and develop antibodies against it. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective public-health interventions, preventing millions of deaths annually from diseases such as measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, influenza, hepatitis B and yellow fever. The vaccine industry encompasses research, development, manufacturing and distribution of immunisation products by pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms and public-health organisations. Major global vaccine manufacturers include multinational corporations such as GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Pfizer, Sanofi and AstraZeneca, alongside emerging producers in India, China and Brazil. The sector has grown significantly in recent decades, driven by expanded immunisation programmes in low- and middle-income countries, the development of new vaccines for diseases such as human papillomavirus and rotavirus, and emergency responses to outbreaks including Ebola, Zika and Covid-19. Vaccine development involves lengthy clinical trials to establish safety and efficacy, followed by regulatory approval and large-scale manufacturing. Distribution challenges include maintaining cold-chain logistics, ensuring equitable access across geographies and addressing vaccine hesitancy. International initiatives such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, work to improve access in developing countries. The industry faces ongoing challenges including funding for vaccines against diseases affecting poorer populations, intellectual property debates and the need for rapid response platforms for emerging infectious threats.
