Tshipi Borwa

Tshipi Borwa is an openpit manganese mine located in the Kalahari Manganese Field in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The mine is operated by Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining, a joint venture between several shareholders including Ntsimbintle Holdings, OM Holdings and other partners. Tshipi Borwa produces high-grade manganese ore, a critical mineral used primarily in steelmaking and increasingly in battery technologies for renewable energy storage and the energy transition. The mine commenced commercial production in 2012 and has grown to become one of the largest manganese operations in the Kalahari Manganese Field, which hosts the world's largest known land-based manganese resources. The facility employs conventional openpit mining methods and operates processing infrastructure to produce lump and fine manganese ore products for domestic and export markets. Tshipi Borwa's strategic significance lies in its contribution to South Africa's position as a leading global manganese supplier, with the mineral playing an essential role in steel production and emerging applications in battery manufacturing. The mine sits within a cluster of major manganese operations in the Northern Cape, including Hotazel Manganese Mines' Mamatwan and Wessels mines. Tshipi Borwa has expanded its production capacity through successive phases since its commissioning, reflecting strong global demand for manganese. The operation is a key economic driver in the Northern Cape, providing employment and supporting regional development in an area rich in mineral resources.

Tshipi Borwa Updates

CRITICAL DIVERSIFICATION: Exxaro Resources, which is best known for coal mining, has joined the International Manganese Institute, signalling its diversification into the critical mineral. The move followed Exxaro’s recent signing of binding agreements to acquire shares and claims in manganese assets held by Ntsimbintle Holdings and OM Holdings for R11.67-billion. The transaction will give Exxaro exposure to four operating mines, including 60.1% effective ownership in the Tshipi Borwa openpit manganese mine (pictured), in the Northern Cape.
