Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University is a public research university located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. The institution is one of the country's oldest universities and maintains a strong reputation for research output, particularly in the natural sciences, health sciences and engineering. It operates across multiple campuses in the Western Cape, with its main campus in the historic town of Stellenbosch, approximately 50 kilometres east of Cape Town. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across ten faculties, including medicine, science, engineering, agriculture and social sciences. Stellenbosch University is home to several research centres and institutes focused on infectious diseases, public health and genomic surveillance, contributing to national and continental health security initiatives. The institution has played a notable role in pandemic preparedness and response, including research on zoonotic diseases and viral pathogens. It is a bilingual university, historically Afrikaans-medium but now offering programmes in both Afrikaans and English. The university enrolls more than 30 000 students and employs several thousand academic and support staff. Stellenbosch University was established in 1918, though its origins trace back to the Stellenbosch Gymnasium founded in 1866 and the Victoria College established in 1887.
