SKA Observatory

SKA Observatory (Square Kilometre Array Observatory) is an intergovernmental organisation established to build and operate the world's largest radio telescope. The observatory is headquartered at Jodrell Bank in the United Kingdom and operates facilities across two continents. Its primary instruments are SKA-Mid, located in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province, and SKA-Low, situated in Western Australia. The organisation brings together member states including South Africa, Australia, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Sweden, Canada, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. SKA Observatory's mandate is to construct and manage radio telescope arrays that will collectively provide unprecedented sensitivity and survey speed for radio astronomy research. The SKA-Mid array builds on the existing MeerKAT telescope infrastructure in South Africa, while SKA-Low complements the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) in Western Australia. The observatory's scientific mission encompasses fundamental research in cosmology, galaxy evolution, pulsars and the detection of gravitational waves. Construction of the telescope arrays represents one of the largest international science projects of the twenty-first century. The organisation works closely with national partners including the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory. The SKA Observatory was formally established as an intergovernmental organisation in 2021, following decades of planning and pathfinder projects.

France joins SKA Observatory as fourteenth member, boosting computing capacity

France became the fourteenth member of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory in June 2026, doubling the organisation's membership since its establishment in 2021. The country has established the Extreme Computing Lab for Astronomical Telescopes to handle the significant data-processing challenges posed by the telescope arrays and was awarded its first construction contract last year to computing specialist Bull for producing science data processing hardware, with first installations scheduled for Australia later this year.

SKA-Mid achieves first fringes milestone as early operations approach

Two dishes of the SKA-Mid instrument in South Africa's Karoo successfully worked together as an interferometer for the first time in January 2026, achieving "first fringes" by observing a radio galaxy 2.6-billion light-years away. Seven SKA-Mid dishes have been assembled to date, with 12 more being delivered from manufacturer CETC54 in China, and the entire array is expected to start early operations by July 2028.

MeerKAT detects record-breaking signal from early universe

Astronomers using South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope discovered the most distant hydroxyl megamaser ever detected, located in a merging galaxy more than eight-billion light-years away, in just five hours of observing time. The discovery demonstrates MeerKAT's sensitivity and provides a preview of what the SKA Observatory might achieve when fully operational.
