Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is a province in central Canada, bordered by Alberta to the west, Manitoba to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US states of Montana and North Dakota to the south. Its capital is Regina, while Saskatoon is the largest city. The province has a population of about 1.2-million people and covers an area of more than 650 000 km². Saskatchewan's economy is heavily resource-based, with agriculture, mining and energy as the dominant sectors. It is one of the world's leading producers of potash, uranium and wheat, and also holds significant oil and natural gas reserves. The province is increasingly recognised for its lithium brine resources, particularly in the south, which are being developed using direct lithium extraction technologies. Saskatchewan is also a major exporter of pulses, canola and other agricultural commodities. The province operates under a parliamentary system with a unicameral legislature. Saskatchewan joined the Canadian Confederation in 1905, carved from the former Northwest Territories, and has since developed into a key contributor to Canada's resource economy.

Saskatchewan's uranium sector is advancing rapidly, with Manhattan Uranium selecting 25 priority drill targets for a 5 000 m programme at the Murmac and Strike projects in the northern Athabasca basin starting in June 2026, while Cameco has increased its ownership of the Cigar Lake mine to 57.4% for $115-million and resumed full production at McArthur River and Key Lake following flooding disruptions in May. Denison Mines' Phoenix in-situ recovery mine, which received all regulatory approvals in February and made a final investment decision shortly thereafter, has mobilised construction teams to the Wheeler River property and completed tree clearing, helipad construction and civil works for a concrete batch plant, targeting first uranium production by mid-2028. The province is also emerging as a hub for natural hydrogen development, with Max Power Mining securing a $25-million investment from Eric Sprott to advance Canada's first subsurface natural hydrogen system at the Lawson Complex and signing a memorandum of understanding with TerraVolt Energy to evaluate integrating natural hydrogen and produced brine waters into AI data centre infrastructure.

Cameco's Cigar Lake acquisition from Tepco Resources raises the company's stake in one of the world's highest-grade uranium mines, which holds proven and probable reserves of 172-million pounds of triuranium octoxide and has produced about 174-million packaged pounds since 2014, with planned production of 17.5-million to 18-million pounds this year and life-of-mine extension work under way to 2036. The company temporarily halted production at Key Lake and reduced activity at McArthur River in May after flooding caused the Smoothstone River bridge to collapse, but successfully returned to full production by late May while maintaining its full-year consolidated production outlook of 19.5-million to 21.5-million pounds.

Manhattan Uranium's planned 25-hole drill programme, funded as the company works to earn a 70% interest in the Uranium City projects by spending C$6-million on exploration, will test follow-up opportunities near prior uranium results and first-pass tests of newly defined targets along more than 60 km of prospective electromagnetic conductor packages on the northern margin of the Athabasca basin. Chairperson William Sheriff says the Athabasca basin remains one of the world's premier uranium regions, while CEO Galen McNamara describes the programme as a significant catalyst for the company, noting the basin's well-established track record of delivering world-class uranium discoveries.

Max Power Mining's Lawson Complex development, which confirmed Canada's first subsurface natural hydrogen system with a potentially significant helium component following drilling in the heart of Saskatchewan's 475 km Genesis Trend, is finalising plans for an expanded near-term follow-up drill programme designed to validate commerciality after completing high-resolution three-dimensional seismic imaging. The memorandum of understanding with TerraVolt Energy, EcoTech Building Solutions and Carbon Neutral Growth Fund contemplates integrating natural hydrogen, modular power systems and associated produced brine waters into next-generation AI and high-performance computing infrastructure, addressing concerns around grid demand and water consumption in traditional data centre development.

Prairie Lithium has started factory acceptance testing at its commercial-scale direct lithium extraction unit, which will be the largest of its kind in North America at about four times the scale of Standard Lithium's single commercial-scale column in Arkansas, with the unit to be transported to the Phase 1 production facility in Saskatchewan for installation ahead of targeted first production in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has secured Phase 1 production of 150 t a year of lithium carbonate equivalent under a binding offtake agreement with Hydro Lithium in South Korea, which is also providing A$10-million of proprietary refining equipment that reduces Prairie's upfront capital requirements for producing an upgraded intermediate lithium product.
