Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto is a British-Australian multinational mining and metals corporation and one of the world's largest mining companies. The company is dual-listed on the London Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange, with headquarters in London and a management office in Melbourne. Rio Tinto operates across six continents, extracting and processing mineral resources including iron ore, aluminium, copper, diamonds, gold, borates, titanium dioxide, salt, gypsum and uranium. The group is a leading global producer of iron ore, particularly from its extensive operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which accounts for a significant portion of its revenue. Rio Tinto also holds major aluminium assets in Canada, Iceland and Australia, and operates significant copper mines in the United States, Mongolia and Chile. In Africa, the company has interests including Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa, one of the world's largest producers of titanium dioxide feedstocks and zircon, and Rossing Uranium in Namibia. The company employs around 60,000 people worldwide and generates annual revenues exceeding $50-billion. Rio Tinto was formed in 1995 through the merger of RTZ Corporation and CEM, though its origins trace back to 1873 when the Rio Tinto mine in Spain was acquired by a consortium of investors.
