Mining giant Rio Tinto’s subsidiary Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) hosted president Cyril Ramaphosa during his visit to the Richards Bay region on May 7, marking his first official visit to the company’s operations.

As RBM celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, the company expresses that the visit provides a pivotal moment to reflect on its historical impact in the region, its role as a key contributor to the South African economy and the company's future trajectory.

As one of the largest mineral sands operations globally, RBM occupies a significant position within both the South African mining sector and international supply chains.

During the visit, Ramaphosa toured RBM’s operations, including its largest mining pond and state-of-the-art smelter control room, and engaged directly with employees and union representatives.

The company, in a media release, says the cornerstone of this success has been its enduring partnership with host communities and the government, adding that this collaborative foundation enables the forward-looking approach seen in its latest developments.

This includes the approval of the Zulti South project, which represents a major investment in the long-term sustainability of RBM’s operations.

Additionally, through initiatives such as the recently commissioned Bolobedu solar power project, RBM says it is integrating renewable energy to reduce emissions and enhance energy resilience.

“Ultimately, this visit underscored the vital importance of continued collaboration between government, industry and communities in driving economic growth and long-term development in South Africa,” the company says.
