Richards Bay

Richards Bay is a city in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, situated on the country's north-eastern coast approximately 180 kilometres north of Durban. The city serves as one of Africa's largest and busiest deep-water ports, playing a critical role in the export of bulk commodities. Richards Bay is home to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, the world's largest coal export facility, which handles millions of tonnes of coal annually from mines in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. The port also accommodates significant exports of minerals, metals and agricultural products, supported by extensive rail and road infrastructure linking the city to inland production centres. Major industrial facilities in Richards Bay include aluminium smelters, mineral processing plants and fertiliser production operations, making the city a key node in South Africa's minerals and energy value chain. The city's economy is heavily dependent on port operations, freight logistics and heavy industry, with companies such as Transnet, Grindrod and numerous private rail operators maintaining a strong presence. Richards Bay was developed in the 1970s as a planned industrial and port city to support the export of coal and other bulk commodities, transforming from a small coastal settlement into a major economic hub. The city's strategic location and deep-water harbour continue to underpin its significance to South Africa's trade and industrial sectors.
