Rand Water

Rand Water is a bulk water utility that supplies potable water to municipalities, mines and industries across Gauteng and parts of neighbouring provinces in South Africa. The utility is one of the largest water boards in the world, serving about 12-million people across an area of approximately 18 000 km². Rand Water draws raw water primarily from the Vaal Dam and treats it at several large treatment plants, including the Zuikerbosch and Vereeniging works, before distributing it through an extensive pipeline network. The organisation supplies water to major metropolitan municipalities including the City of Johannesburg, the City of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, as well as smaller municipalities such as Midvaal, Emfuleni, Merafong and Sedibeng district municipalities. Rand Water operates as a state-owned entity under the oversight of the Department of Water and Sanitation. The utility plays a critical role in supporting economic activity in Gauteng, South Africa's industrial and commercial heartland. It also supplies water to mining operations and industrial users in the region. Rand Water was established in 1903 to meet the growing water demands of the Witwatersrand goldfields and has since expanded its infrastructure and service area significantly.
