Technology and education critical to advancing mine safety, says Booyco Electronics

Proximity detection systems have become a fundamental component of responsible mining as operations across Africa evolve in scale, complexity and automation, according to Booyco Electronics. The company says PDS technology provides real-time situational awareness and automated interventions to prevent collisions between trackless mobile machinery, pedestrians and fixed infrastructure in environments where visibility is often compromised by dust, darkness or confined spaces.

Level 9 PDS adoption slower than expected despite 2022 mandate

While Level 9 vehicle intervention for collision avoidance became mandatory on South African mines in 2022, industry-wide adoption has been slower than anticipated, primarily owing to limited operational readiness rather than technical constraints. Booyco Electronics CEO Anton Lourens says successful implementation depends on comprehensive risk assessments, coordinated collaboration across management, operations, safety, engineering, production and human resources, and structured change management to ensure the technology complements rather than disrupts existing systems and production flows.

Industry alignment will define Africa's PDS journey

Booyco Electronics says the future of proximity detection systems will be shaped by strong long-term industry collaboration, with effective rollout requiring technology suppliers, original-equipment manufacturers, mines and regulators to work in step. The company emphasises that operational readiness requires leadership commitment, extensive communication and training to foster understanding of system functionality and value, while data generated by PDS provides valuable operational insight for identifying high-risk zones, traffic flow bottlenecks and behavioural trends.
