Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is an independent nation located in the south-western Pacific Ocean, occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands. The capital is Port Moresby. The country has a population of about nine-million people and operates as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with a parliamentary democracy. Papua New Guinea's economy is heavily dependent on natural resources, with mining, oil and gas extraction, agriculture and forestry forming the dominant sectors. The country is a significant producer of gold, copper, nickel, cobalt and liquefied natural gas, and these commodities account for the majority of export earnings. The currency is the kina. Major mining operations include the Porgera gold mine, the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine and the Lihir gold mine, which have attracted substantial foreign investment. Papua New Guinea is a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States. The country gained independence from Australia in 1975, having previously been administered as an Australian territory following the Second World War.
