Nickel

Nickel is a silvery-white metallic element and critical industrial commodity used primarily in stainless steel production, battery manufacturing and metal alloys. The metal accounts for approximately two-thirds of global nickel consumption through its role in stainless steel, where it imparts corrosion resistance and strength. Nickel is increasingly significant in the energy transition as a key component in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, particularly in nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) cathode chemistries. Major nickel-producing countries include Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, New Caledonia and Australia, with Indonesia dominating global supply through laterite ore deposits. The metal is extracted through mining of sulphide and laterite ores, followed by various refining processes including pyrometallurgical smelting, hydrometallurgical leaching and electrorefining to produce refined nickel suitable for industrial use. Nickel prices are traded on the London Metal Exchange and are subject to volatility driven by stainless steel demand from China, battery sector growth and supply constraints. The metal is classified as a critical mineral by several jurisdictions, including the United States and the European Union, owing to its strategic importance in clean energy technologies and industrial applications. Demand for high-purity nickel suitable for battery applications is projected to grow substantially as electrification accelerates, prompting investment in new refining capacity and technologies. Nickel was first isolated as a pure element in the eighteenth century and has been commercially produced since the nineteenth century, with large-scale industrial use expanding alongside stainless steel development in the early twentieth century.

French miner Eramet has halted nickel ore production at its Weda Bay Nickel joint venture in Indonesia after the government slashed the operation's 2026 mining quota by 70% to 12-million tonnes from 42-million tonnes produced in 2025, leaving the company unable to continue operating. Production has been suspended since late May, with the workforce reduced and the site entering a maintenance phase while Eramet Indonesia discusses a permit extension with the mining ministry, which typically revises quotas before the end of July. The 42-million tonnes supplied by Weda Bay Nickel last year accounted for about a third of the 120-million tonnes processed at Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park, one of the country's major nickel hubs, and Eramet Indonesia CEO Jerome Baudelet warns that without an extension, imports from the Philippines will increase substantially to cover the deficit.

Canada-based Sherritt International Corporation has appointed Fitzroy Richardson as interim CFO effective immediately to provide experienced financial leadership as the company works to complete outstanding quarterly filings and seek revocation of a failure-to-file cease trade order issued by the Ontario Securities Commission on May 21. Richardson brings nearly 30 years of experience at Sherritt, where he has held senior finance and treasury roles, most recently as president of subsidiary New Providence Metals Marketing, and his appointment strengthens the leadership team as the corporation navigates acute financial, legal and operational challenges stemming from expanded US sanctions against Cuba announced on May 1. Sherritt operates a strategically important refinery in Alberta, recognised as the only significant cobalt refinery and one of just three nickel refineries in North America, and has suspended its direct participation in joint venture activities in Cuba while working with stakeholders and advisers to address the US executive order.

India's federal Ministry of Mines is expected to shortly unveil a policy with incentives to process lithium and nickel with an outlay of around 30-billion rupees ($313.48-million), according to two sources familiar with the matter, as New Delhi targets 30% electric car penetration and 80% for two-wheelers by 2030 from 6% and 9% at present. To qualify for the incentives, lithium processing plants must have a minimum capacity of 30 000 t, while nickel plants must have at least 50 000 t, with the policy covering two critical minerals linked to securing an electric vehicle value system.

The UN Economic Commission for Africa has launched a €15-million regional project to strengthen environmentally and socially responsible critical minerals value chains across the Southern African Development Community region, running from 2026 to 2031 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The project seeks to support sustainable industrialisation, value addition, job creation and environmental protection in the region's growing critical minerals sector, with ECA Southern Africa regional director Eunice Kamwendo noting that Africa exports most of its minerals in raw form, capturing only a small share of the value despite hosting a significant proportion of the world's reserves in key minerals such as cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel and platinum-group metals.

Modern metals developer Lifezone Metals is advancing the Kabanga nickel project in Tanzania towards a final investment decision targeted for 2026, following completion of a feasibility study in July 2025 that confirmed mineral reserves of 52.2-million tonnes grading 1.98% nickel, 0.27% copper and 0.15% cobalt. The study estimates an after-tax net present value of $1.58-billion at an 8% discount rate and an internal rate of return of 23.3%, with the initial development phase designed for a 3.4-million-tonne-a-year underground mine and concentrator expected to produce 902 000 t of nickel, 134 000 t of copper and 69 000 t of cobalt in concentrate over an 18-year mine life.
