Natural Diamond Council

The Natural Diamond Council is an industry body that promotes and safeguards consumer and trade confidence in natural, mined diamonds as distinct from laboratory-grown alternatives. It represents major diamond producers and industry stakeholders, coordinating marketing, education and provenance-related initiatives across the natural diamond supply chain. The council's mandate includes highlighting the economic and developmental contribution of diamond mining to producer countries, including Botswana, a leading source of natural diamonds. It works alongside trading hubs such as the Dubai Diamond Exchange and organisations like the DMCC to support transparent and traceable diamond markets. The body engages with issues around certification, ethical sourcing and consumer trust, particularly as synthetic diamonds gain market share. It also collaborates with producer-country institutions, such as Botswana's Okavango Diamond Company, on messaging around the value of natural stones. The council's activities extend to supporting trade finance and market infrastructure discussions relevant to diamond-producing economies. It positions itself as a counterpoint to the growing lab-grown diamond sector, emphasising rarity and origin. Its work intersects with broader debates on critical minerals, mining-sector diversification and Islamic finance-linked trade structures in markets like the United Arab Emirates.
