Malaysia

Malaysia is a South-East Asian country comprising the Malay Peninsula and the northern portion of the island of Borneo. Its capital is Kuala Lumpur, while the administrative centre is Putrajaya. The country has a population of about 33-million and operates as a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. Malaysia's economy is one of the most dynamic in South-East Asia, driven by manufacturing, services, petroleum and natural gas production, palm oil cultivation, electronics exports and tourism. The currency is the ringgit. Key exports include electrical and electronic products, palm oil, petroleum, liquefied natural gas, chemicals and machinery. Malaysia is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the Commonwealth. The country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1957, and the federation was expanded in 1963 to include Sabah, Sarawak and briefly Singapore. Malaysia has developed into an upper-middle-income economy with significant foreign investment in technology and manufacturing sectors.
