Lynas Rare Earths

Lynas Rare Earths is an Australian mining and materials processing company specialising in the extraction and refining of rare-earth elements. The company is headquartered in Sydney, Australia, and operates one of the world's largest rare-earths deposits at Mount Weld in Western Australia. Lynas is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) under the ticker code LYC. The company's core business involves mining rare-earth ore at Mount Weld and processing it at its advanced materials plant in Kuantan, Malaysia, where the ore is separated into individual rare-earth oxides and compounds. Lynas produces a range of rare-earth products including neodymium, praseodymium, lanthanum, cerium and other elements critical to modern technologies such as electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, electronics and defence applications. The company holds a significant position in the global rare-earths supply chain as one of the few major producers outside China, which dominates the sector. Lynas has pursued expansion projects to diversify its processing footprint, including plans for facilities in the United States and Australia to reduce reliance on its Malaysian operations. The company was founded in 1983 and commenced commercial rare-earths production in 2013 after overcoming technical and regulatory challenges. Lynas has become strategically important to Western governments seeking to secure supply chains for critical minerals essential to the energy transition and advanced manufacturing.

Lynas Rare Earths has warned that costs at its heavy rare earths expansion in Malaysia have risen to nearly A$294-million from A$180-million, sending shares to a more than five-month low despite record quarterly revenue. The company said first gadolinium output is expected in early fiscal 2028, followed by yttrium in early calendar 2028 and then lutetium, while quarterly sales rose almost 70% to A$288.9-million on higher average selling prices, though volumes missed forecasts after ore quality issues at Mt Weld, in Western Australia.
