John Thornton

John Thornton is a prominent figure in the global mining and finance sectors, known for his roles at major gold mining companies and investment banks. He serves as executive co-chairman of Barrick Gold, one of the world's largest gold mining companies, where he has played a key role in strategic direction and major transactions. Before his mining career, Thornton spent more than two decades at Goldman Sachs, where he rose to become president and co-chief operating officer, establishing himself as one of the most influential investment bankers of his generation. His transition from Wall Street to the mining industry brought a financial and strategic perspective to resource development. At Barrick, Thornton has been instrumental in shaping the company's portfolio, including the formation of joint ventures and the pursuit of world-class assets such as the Reko Diq copper-gold project in Pakistan. He has worked alongside chief executive Mark Bristow to drive operational improvements and capital discipline across Barrick's global operations. Thornton's influence extends beyond mining; he has served on numerous corporate and academic boards and has been active in fostering business ties between Western companies and emerging markets. His background in mergers and acquisitions has informed Barrick's approach to consolidation and partnership in the gold sector. Thornton is a Canadian-American businessman who has maintained a high profile in both the financial and natural resources industries throughout his career.
