Italy

Italy is a country in southern Europe occupying a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. The capital is Rome. With a population of about 60-million, Italy has the third-largest economy in the eurozone and is a founding member of the European Union. The country's dominant sectors include manufacturing, particularly automotive, machinery and fashion, tourism, agriculture and renewable energy. Italy uses the euro as its currency and operates as a parliamentary republic. The economy is characterised by a prosperous industrial north and a less-developed agricultural south. Italy is a member of the G7, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The country has a strong tradition in engineering, design and luxury goods production, with globally recognised brands in automotive, fashion and food. Italy's energy sector has seen significant investment in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, as the country works to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The nation plays an important role in European trade and manufacturing supply chains.
