Horne Smelter

Horne Smelter is a copper smelting facility located in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, Canada. The facility is operated by Glencore, one of the world's largest diversified natural resource companies. Horne Smelter processes copper concentrates from mines across North America and internationally, producing copper anodes and other intermediate products for further refining. The smelter has been a cornerstone of the regional economy in northwestern Québec for decades, providing employment and supporting the mining industry in the Abitibi region. The facility uses pyrometallurgical processes to extract copper from ore concentrates, with the capacity to handle complex feed materials. Horne Smelter has faced environmental scrutiny over emissions, particularly concerning arsenic and other heavy metals, leading to ongoing discussions about emission controls and community health. The operation remains strategically important to Canada's critical minerals supply chain, given copper's essential role in electrification, renewable energy infrastructure and electric vehicles. Glencore has invested in modernisation and environmental upgrades to maintain the facility's competitiveness and regulatory compliance. The smelter was commissioned in 1927 by Noranda Mines and has undergone multiple expansions and technological improvements over its operational life.
