FMCG

FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) is an industry term for products that sell quickly at relatively low cost and have high turnover rates. The sector encompasses everyday items such as food and beverages, toiletries, cleaning products, over-the-counter medicines and other consumables that require frequent replenishment. FMCG products are characterised by short shelf lives, either due to perishability or high consumer demand, and are typically sold through supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and other retail outlets. The industry is highly competitive, with success depending on efficient supply chains, strong distribution networks and brand recognition. Manufacturers and retailers in the FMCG sector operate on thin profit margins per unit but achieve profitability through volume sales. The sector is considered relatively recession-resistant, as consumers continue to purchase essential goods even during economic downturns. FMCG companies invest heavily in marketing, packaging innovation and logistics to maintain market share and ensure products reach consumers quickly and in optimal condition. In emerging markets, the FMCG sector is a significant driver of economic growth, employment and retail infrastructure development. The industry faces ongoing challenges including supply chain disruption, changing consumer preferences towards healthier and more sustainable products, and the rise of e-commerce distribution channels.
