Florence Copper

Florence Copper is an in-situ copper recovery facility located in Arizona, United States. The project is operated by Taseko Mines and represents one of the first commercial-scale applications of in-situ recovery technology for copper production in North America. The facility extracts copper from underground oxide ore deposits without conventional mining, using a process that circulates a dilute acid solution through the ore body to dissolve copper minerals. The pregnant solution is then pumped to the surface where copper is recovered through solvent extraction and electrowinning processes. Florence Copper's development marks a significant shift in copper production methods, offering a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional open-pit or underground mining operations. The project has undergone extensive permitting and environmental review processes given its novel approach to copper extraction. The facility is designed to produce cathode copper, a high-purity product used in electrical and industrial applications. Florence Copper's commercial operation demonstrates the viability of in-situ recovery as an alternative extraction method for certain copper deposits, particularly those that may be uneconomic to mine conventionally. The project's location in Arizona places it within one of the United States' historically significant copper-producing regions.
