Ekurhuleni

Ekurhuleni is a metropolitan municipality in Gauteng province, South Africa, forming part of the Gauteng city-region. The municipality is one of three metropolitan areas in Gauteng, alongside Johannesburg and Tshwane, and serves as a major industrial and logistics hub. Ekurhuleni encompasses several towns and cities, including Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Springs, Kempton Park and Alberton, which were amalgamated into a single metropolitan authority in 2000. The metropolitan area is home to OR Tambo International Airport, South Africa's busiest airport and a critical gateway for international trade and travel. Ekurhuleni's economy is anchored by manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and transport sectors, with significant concentrations of automotive assembly, chemicals, steel production and food processing. The municipality has a population of approximately 3.9 million people, making it one of the most populous metros in the country. Its strategic location along major freight corridors linking Gauteng to Durban and Maputo has reinforced its role as a distribution and industrial centre. Ekurhuleni faces challenges common to South African metros, including service delivery pressures, infrastructure maintenance and unemployment. The name Ekurhuleni means "place of peace" in isiXhosa, reflecting the municipality's post-apartheid identity. The metro is governed by an elected council and has been the site of political contestation among the African National Congress, Democratic Alliance and ActionSA in recent elections.
