Damara Belt

The Damara Belt is a major geological structure and metallogenic province extending across central and northern Namibia and into north-western Botswana. It is a late Proterozoic to early Palaeozoic orogenic belt formed during the Pan-African orogeny, approximately 550-million to 450-million years ago, through the collision of the Congo and Kalahari cratons. The belt is characterised by intensely folded and metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks, which host significant mineral deposits. The Damara Belt is economically important as a major source of copper, with notable deposits including the Tsumeb and Kombat mines in Namibia, as well as uranium, tin, tungsten and semi-precious stones. Copper mineralisation in the belt is typically associated with metasedimentary sequences and occurs in structurally controlled zones. The north-eastern extension of the Damara Belt into Botswana has attracted exploration interest in recent years, as companies seek to replicate the success of Namibian copper discoveries. The belt's geological complexity and mineral endowment make it a key target for base metal exploration in southern Africa. Its formation and mineralisation are linked to rift-related sedimentation followed by compressional tectonics and hydrothermal fluid circulation.
