Cullinan Mine

Cullinan Mine is an underground diamond mine located near the town of Cullinan in Gauteng province, South Africa, approximately 40 km east of Pretoria. The mine is one of the world's most famous diamond operations, historically known for producing some of the largest and highest-quality gem diamonds ever discovered. It was originally established in 1902 by Sir Thomas Cullinan and was initially known as the Premier Mine until it was renamed Cullinan in 2003. The mine gained international renown in 1905 when it yielded the Cullinan Diamond, the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found at 3 106 carats, which was later cut into several polished stones including the Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa, both now part of the British Crown Jewels. Cullinan Mine operates through block-cave mining methods and targets kimberlite pipes that extend deep underground. The mine has changed ownership several times over its history and has been operated by various companies including De Beers and Petra Diamonds. Production focuses on high-value Type II diamonds, which are exceptionally pure and often colourless or fancy-coloured, commanding premium prices in the global market. The mine remains a significant contributor to South Africa's diamond industry despite the challenges of deep-level mining and fluctuating diamond markets. Cullinan continues to produce notable large diamonds periodically, maintaining its reputation as one of the world's premier diamond sources.
