Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a technology model that delivers computing services – including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics and intelligence – over the internet, enabling on-demand access to shared pools of configurable resources. Users can provision and release resources rapidly without direct management of the underlying infrastructure, typically paying only for what they consume. The technology operates through three primary service models: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS), each offering different levels of control and management. Cloud deployments can be public, private, hybrid or multicloud, depending on ownership, location and access requirements. Major providers include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and IBM Cloud, alongside regional and specialised operators. Cloud computing has become foundational to digital transformation across sectors, enabling scalability, flexibility and cost efficiency for enterprises, governments and startups alike. The technology supports emerging applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics and the Internet of Things by providing the computational power and storage capacity these workloads demand. Adoption has accelerated in Africa, where cloud infrastructure is expanding to support healthcare, financial services, e-commerce and public-sector digitisation. The model reduces the need for capital-intensive on-premises data centres, though considerations around data sovereignty, latency and connectivity remain important in many markets. Cloud computing emerged in the early 2000s, building on earlier concepts of utility computing and virtualisation, and has since reshaped enterprise IT and software delivery worldwide.
