Catalytic Converters

Gqeberha-based Jendamark Automation has designed and built a catalytic converter shrinking machine that reshapes stainless steel casings to tolerances of 50 microns in 30-second cycle times, with 95% of production exported to Europe, India and the US. The shrinker uses SEW-EURODRIVE servo-geared units to synchronise two motors pulling a steel ring over tapered segments that collapse the casing around ceramic monoliths coated with platinum and palladium, while an automatic tool-change system cuts downtime from two to three hours to 45 seconds, enabling production of about 80 additional parts per shift.

South Africa's catalytic converter exports fell from R34.9-billion in 2021 to R25.9-billion in 2025, a 54% drop driven by the global shift to electric vehicles that do not require the emission-control devices. Despite the decline, catalytic converters remained the top automotive component export last year at 44.1% of the R61.2-billion total component export value, followed by engine parts at R5.8-billion, as overall vehicle exports reached a record 414 271 units valued at R229.8-billion.

The three companies have formed a multimillion-pound, multiyear collaboration to develop new technologies using platinum group metals beyond their current use in catalytic converters, which absorb about 60% of global supply. The programme will explore applications in clean hydrogen, enhanced emissions detection, electronic materials and high-performance alloys to secure and diversify future demand for the basket of metals.
