Rainbow Rare Earths reports that 75% of the Phalaborwa rare earths project flowsheet is now in the engineering phase of the definitive feasibility study (DFS), due by the end of 2026. Optimisation with its technical partner has simplified the process so a mixed rare-earth feed will flow directly into solvent extraction (SX) separation, producing separated neodymium/praseodymium oxide and samarium-europium-gadolinium at 99.5% purity, alongside dysprosium, terbium and yttrium.
Pilot plant demonstrates commercial-scale potentialThe Johannesburg pilot plant has operated successfully throughout the first half of 2026, proving it can produce a commercial intermediate product, with final SX circuit optimisation under way. Rainbow says Phalaborwa will be the first project to commercially recover rare earths from phosphogypsum, avoiding the mining, crushing and milling costs of conventional rare earths projects; construction is targeted to start by the end of 2027, with first production by early 2029.
Bosveld stake transfer tied to DFS completionRainbow, which holds 85% of the project, signed an agreement with Bosveld Phosphates in June 2023 to acquire the remaining 15%. On DFS completion, the unincorporated joint venture will convert into an incorporated company, into which Bosveld will transfer required project assets at Rainbow's election.

Work is continuing at the project, with the focus being on optimising and simplifying the flowsheet to enhance the plant operability and reduce risk when moving to commercial scale.
