Animal Health

Animal health is the sector concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting domesticated animals, livestock and wildlife. The field encompasses veterinary medicine, pharmaceutical development, diagnostic services, biosecurity measures and regulatory oversight. Animal health is critical to food security, as healthy livestock underpin meat, dairy and egg production, and to economic stability in agricultural communities. The sector addresses infectious diseases such as African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza, as well as parasitic infections, nutritional disorders and zoonotic threats that can transfer to humans. Key players include veterinary practitioners, animal health product manufacturers, government regulators and international bodies such as the World Organisation for Animal Health. In Africa, animal health services are essential to smallholder farmers and commercial operations alike, supporting livelihoods and export markets. Investment in animal health infrastructure, vaccine development and disease surveillance systems has grown as governments recognise the link between animal disease control and broader public health. The sector also intersects with environmental management, as wildlife health monitoring can provide early warning of emerging pathogens. Advances in diagnostics, genomics and digital health tools are transforming disease detection and herd management practices across the continent.
