Animal Feed

Animal feed is the sector concerned with the production, formulation and distribution of nutritional products for livestock, poultry and other farmed animals. The industry encompasses the manufacture of compound feeds, premixes, concentrates and feed additives designed to support animal growth, health and productivity. Animal feed typically combines grains such as maize, wheat and soya with protein sources, vitamins, minerals and other supplements tailored to the nutritional requirements of different species and production stages. The sector plays a critical role in the agricultural value chain, linking crop production to meat, dairy and egg output. Major feed producers operate mills and blending facilities that serve commercial farms, smallholders and integrated livestock operations. Feed costs represent a significant share of total livestock production expenses, making feed efficiency and ingredient pricing key drivers of profitability. The industry is subject to quality standards, biosecurity regulations and traceability requirements to ensure animal health and food safety. Demand for animal feed is closely tied to population growth, rising protein consumption and the expansion of intensive farming systems. In Africa, the animal feed sector is growing rapidly as poultry and livestock production industrialises, with South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt among the leading markets. The industry faces ongoing challenges including volatile commodity prices, supply-chain disruptions and the need to balance productivity with environmental sustainability.
