Agri SA

Agri SA (Agricultural Business Chamber) is a federation of agricultural organisations in South Africa representing commercial farmers and agribusinesses across the country. The organisation serves as the largest and most representative voice for the commercial farming sector, with membership drawn from provincial affiliates and commodity groups spanning field crops, horticulture, livestock and mixed farming enterprises. Agri SA's mandate includes advocacy on policy matters affecting agriculture, engagement with government on land reform, water rights, labour legislation and trade, and the promotion of a stable and enabling environment for agricultural investment and production. The federation provides research, economic analysis and technical support to its members, and participates in national forums on food security, rural development and natural resource management. Agri SA is headquartered in Pretoria and maintains close liaison with the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, the Land Bank and other state entities. The organisation also engages with international bodies and trade partners on market access, phytosanitary standards and agricultural cooperation. Agri SA has been active in negotiations over land redistribution, tenure security and the transformation of the agricultural sector, seeking to balance commercial viability with broader socioeconomic objectives. The federation was established in 1904 as the South African Agricultural Union and adopted its current name in the post-apartheid era to reflect a broader and more inclusive membership base.

Agri SA welcomes Nersa tariff inquiry findings on agriculture impact

Industry body Agri SA has welcomed the National Energy Regulator of South Africa's Draft Market Inquiry Report into fixed charges and Eskom's Retail Tariff Plan, published on June 26. The inquiry confirms that recent tariff reforms have disproportionately affected agriculture, with a typical 250 kVA irrigated farming operation seeing electricity costs rise 32% in a single season, from about R408 000 to R539 000 a year, making electricity the second-largest input cost after labour.

Agriculture sector records highest first-quarter trade surplus

South Africa's agriculture sector achieved a trade surplus of $1.55-billion in the first quarter of 2026, the highest first-quarter surplus in the country's agriculture trade history and a 16.1% improvement on the same period in 2025. The surplus was driven primarily by a 10.6% decline in imports to $1.76-billion rather than export growth, with total agricultural exports reaching $3.3-billion, broadly in line with the previous year.

Fuel supply constraints and price volatility threaten crop production

Agri SA and Agbiz have warned that fuel supply disruptions and rising diesel prices linked to the Middle East conflict pose material risks to South Africa's 2026/27 crop seasons, despite government extending temporary fuel levy relief through May and June. Surveys indicate farmers are receiving partial diesel deliveries or facing delays during critical planting periods, with wheat plantings expected to contract by around 6% to the lowest level in 12 years owing to lower global prices, rising input costs and production uncertainty.
