Airbus has completed the maiden flight of the A350-1000ULR, the world's longest-ranged airliner, developed for Qantas to operate non-stop Sydney–London services covering nearly 10 000 nautical miles in up to 22 hours. The three-hour-43-minute test flight reached 41 000 feet and validated the aircraft's new rear centre fuel tank, which extends range by 1 000 nautical miles; the two-month flight test campaign will certify performance, handling and a new galley air cooling system ahead of delivery to Qantas in April 2027. Separately, Airbus has appointed Eric Kirstetter as executive VP for strategy, effective May 18, succeeding Matthieu Louvot, who moves to lead Airbus Helicopters.
Sintavia delivers aerospace heat exchanger in record two weeks using AI-accelerated simulationComposite mechanical component manufacturer Sintavia has designed, simulated and validated a complex multi-circuit aerospace heat exchanger in two weeks – a process that typically takes months – by integrating Nvidia's RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition with Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software and nTop implicit modelling. The resulting heat exchanger achieved a 30% weight reduction and 20% thermal efficiency improvement, with Nvidia Blackwell graphics processing units running a 30-million-cell conjugate heat transfer simulation 11 times faster than conventional central processing units.
Ugandan graphite tested in US rocket components as rare earth supply concerns persistBlencowe Resources reports that graphite concentrate from its Orom-Cross project in Uganda has been successfully used in a US rocket component testing programme attended by Pluto Aerospace, Purdue University and US government agencies, with initial test firing indicating encouraging high-temperature performance; orbital testing is expected in the latter half of 2026. Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says rare earth exports from China to the US are improving but Beijing still delays some export licences, particularly for yttrium used in semiconductor and aerospace applications, despite a deal last October to allow shipments to flow freely.
