Zuma's Iran visit postponed
President Jacob Zuma has postponed his visit to Iran, the Presidency said on Wednesday.
"South Africa is working on new dates with the Islamic Republic of Iran and South Africa also looks forward to the state visit, which will take relations between the two countries to a higher level," spokesperson Bongani Majola said in a statement.
It was announced earlier this week that Zuma would visit Iran on February 28 and 29 to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The president leaves for Burundi on Thursday. He has been appointed the convenor of an African Union committee of five heads of state and governments tasked with addressing the political situation in the country.
AFP on Tuesday reported that, according to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza had agreed to hold talks to end a 10-month-old crisis.
However, the CNARED umbrella opposition group dismissed the plan as a "false opening".
The opposition group, whose leaders are in exile were reportedly angered by Nkurunziza's apparent attempt to choose who should participate in the talks.
Last year in April, Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term as president. He won the election held in July.
This triggered the crisis in the country.
According to AFP, more than 400 people have been killed and more than 240 000 have been forced to leave the country.
