JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Northam Platinum said the talks held under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on Friday to resolve the disagreement between the platinum miner and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) regarding the company’s two-year wage offer for employees at its Zondereinde mine, were inconclusive.

The NUM’s strike at the mine was entering its third week.

Northam said its offer, which was made on November 5, remained unchanged. The miner was offering a 9% increase for core and an 8% increase for noncore employees, as well as an 8% increase in the living-out allowance.

The NUM was still demanding a R2 000 increase in basic wages for noncore employees, which was equivalent to a 22% to 42% increase, and an increase of R2 100 in basic wages for core employees, which was equivalent to an increase of between 23% and 43%.

Further, the union was also demanding that the living-out allowance be increased by 69% from R2 200 to R3 718 monthly, staggered in two tranches over six months.

The NUM also did not want a multiyear agreement.

Northam noted that it was willing to continue with the facilitated talks, adding that it was encouraged by the NUM’s positive reaction to further discussions.
