Name of the Project
Zero Carbon lithium project.

Location
Upper Rhine Valley, in Germany.

Project Owner/s
Vulcan Energy.

Project Description
A scoping study has demonstrated the project’s potential for a combined operation producing lithium hydroxide and renewable energy with a net zero carbon footprint.

The study is based on a mineral resource estimate comprising a combined indicated and inferred mineral resource of 13.95-million tonnes of contained lithium.

A two-stage expansion plan is envisaged.

Stage 1 will involve the construction and operation of a direct lithium extraction and lithium hydroxide plant at an operating and producing geothermal well and power plant.

Stage 2 entails the drilling of ten new thermal production wells and the construction of new, combined geothermal, direct lithium extraction (DLE) and lithium hydroxide plants at Vulcan’s 100%-owned Ortenau licence.

Latest Developments
Vulcan Energy has announced a collaboration with DuPont Water Solutions to test and scale up DLE for Vulcan’s Zero Carbon lithium extraction process.

The agreement with DuPont is in line with the company’s strategy to test and pursue commercially mature DLE products from major suppliers for its project to minimise technical risks and accelerate project development.

DuPont will use its portfolio of DLE products to assist Vulcan with input and testwork during the definitive feasibility study for the Zero Carbon project, and as part of the project, DuPont will develop and test an integrated DLE process for Vulcan’s brine.

“Collaborating with a company, such as DuPont, is an important de-risking strategy for the DLE component of our Zero Carbon lithium project. DuPont’s diverse set of products, which can be manufactured at scale, are likely to be well suited to sustainably extract the lithium from the brine,” Vulcan MD Dr Francis Wedin has said.
