Name and Location
Yandohun microhydropower rehabilitation project, Liberia.

Project Description
The project is planned to rehabilitate the existing 30 kW Yandohun micro-hydropower plant, a community-managed hydropower station at Yandohun village, in Lofa County, which was damaged during civil unrest in the late 1990s.

The new design will allow for the station’s capacity to reach 60 kW, with the addition of transmission and distribution lines to support the community of Yandohun and its neighbouring villages.

Significant structures also to be rehabilitated include a small dam, an underground water conveyance system and a power station.

Water to the station will be supplied through a built forebay tank, before entering the pressure pipes. Subsequently, it will be diverted through a headrace tunnel and an underground penstock to a power station almost 150 m below the steep slope and overlooking the abandoned forebay tank.

A powerhouse building with a machine floor area, a control room and an office room will be constructed to house the power turbine. The building will also have a standby mini generator to operate in case of emergency power outages.

Value
Not disclosed.

Duration
The plant is expected to be completed a year after the start of construction.

Client
The Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy, represented by its Rural and Renewable Energy Agency.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
GreenCons Liberia (environmental-impact assessment).

Latest Developments
The government of Liberia has applied for funding from the World Bank for a programme titled Catalysing New Renewable Energy in Rural Liberia, and it intends to apply part of the proceeds towards the development of the Yandohun project.

The programme is designed to remedy the country’s power shortages, made worse by a period of war and civil unrest.

Meanwhile, a tender for the construction and completion of the Yandohun power plant has been issued.

On Budget and on Time?
