PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal developer Xceed Resources has been given provincial government approval to develop its Moabsvelden thermal coal project, in Mpumalanga, in South Africa.

The company reported on Tuesday that the provincial government had given environmental approval for the project under the National Environmental Management Act and the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.

The environmental approval was the second of three major licences required to develop the Moabsvelden project, with the first - the mining right - already received.

The third and final licence, the integrated water use licence, was expected in due course, and Xceed noted that discussions with the Department of Water Affairs were at an advanced stage.

The Moabsvelden thermal coal project has a Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 66-million tonnes, and a reserve of 43.8-million tonnes. Mine development was set to start this year, and the project would deliver some three-million tonnes run-of-mine a year.
