Concern is growing again about the position of many of South Africa’s State-owned companies. Corruption and maladministration are major causes of their current distress. However, the sustainability of many of these enterprises is also threatened by their business models, which, in many cases, are no longer suitable. Indeed, if government wishes to avoid large-scale bail-outs or destablising failures, greater attention and focus should now also be given to their restructuring.
