Workforce Staffing - Women in Industry
Vanessa Chutrugon National Finance Director - Workforce Staffing
Vanessa is the National Finance Director for Workforce Staffing, a market leader in staffing and recruitment solutions. Vanessa has helped transform Workforce Staffing’s traditional financial avenues into a strategic powerhouse that maximises opportunities and creates tangible growth. As she says, “It’s not good enough to keep to the traditional finance roles, we need to prioritise growth.” Her role includes providing assurances on financial results declared, overseeing key financial departments, and bringing a new strategic angle to the financial department by analysing market trends and aligning sales strategies.
Born on 23 November 1986 in Port Shepstone Hospital, Vanessa achieved her BCom double major in accounting, and managerial accounting and finance at KZN Westford Campus.
Management style: In certain situations, I have to be quite strong with people from the get-go, mainly so that they don’t just assume I’m a pushover because I’m a woman. However, I am grateful that this hardly happens at Workforce Staffing. With my team, I am firm but fair. As a lot of my role is guided by legislation, there really is no room to be loose.
Personal best achievement: Being appointed to this role! There’s a freedom to be dynamic and I’m close to business decisions about entering and leaving new markets which is very exciting. It’s broken the mould of traditional accountancy and all my hard work in my career has led to this for which I’m very grateful.
Philosophy of life: What you meet in life is destiny, how you meet it is free will.
Message for other women leaders in the South African business community: Shatter the glass ceiling, it’s hard but worth it. I’ve reached the point in my career where I don’t even realise I’m a woman, that’s the way it should be.
