Wonderpark shopping centre extension project, South Africa
Name and Location
Wonderpark shopping centre extension project, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
Emira Property Fund.
Project Description
The project involves the phased extension of Emira’s flagship Wonderpark shopping centre, north-west of Pretoria, in Gauteng, by about 27 000 m2.
This will increase the gross lettable area to 90 000 m2.
The extensions will provide for larger trading areas for all the current national tenants and will introduce new national tenants – Checkers, Dis-Chem, Stuttafords, Hi-Fi Corporation, PQ Clothing, Cotton On and The Hub.
The first phase includes a parking deck, a new basement, a new mall and new outlets for Woolworths, Edgars, Game, Dis-Chem and Truworths.
Once Game has relocated to its new premises, work will begin on the new Checkers and adjacent line shops.
The final phase will involve upgrading the old Edgars, Woolworths and Truworths premises and a revamp of the Pick n Pay Hyper premises, which will include a new mall leading to Pick n Pay.
Wonderpark has undergone several extensions over the years.
The site was first developed in 1985 as a 36 000 m2 shopping centre.
The first extension took place in 1996 to accommodate Spur and Virgin Active.
In 2005, the centre was extended again when Ster Kinekor, Game and a new food court were added.
That was followed by the addition of a new Caltex filling station and Builder’s Express outlets to reach its current size of 63 000 m2.
Value
The cost of the extension is estimated at R513-million.
Duration
Work on the improvements started in December 2012 and the complete extended centre should open for business in May 2015.
