Wollongong Coal warns of job cuts at NSW mines
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Wollongong Coal has warned of 152 redundancies at its Illawarra mines, in New South Wales, as the company continued to cut costs.
The company said this week that it would implement a voluntary and compulsory redundancy process across its Russell Vale and Wongawilli collieries, as well as within the corporate offices.
“While these reductions in jobs are essential at the moment, Wollongong Coal is committed to further developing and operating the underground operations, despite these unprecedented economic times, which sees current global coking coal market prices at historical lows,” said chairperson Jasbir Singh.
Wollongong Coal would continue to employ 256 people across its two operations, with CEO David Stone saying that Wollongong’s focus at Russell Vale was on the developing process while the company awaited government approval for longwall 6.
The company was currently implementing systems, processes and the required operational behaviours to make a step change in its performance.
The company was hoping to start mining its longwall 6 before final government approval was granted for an extension project at Russell Vale, which would extend mine life by five years and increase coal production to 4.7-million tonnes a year.
Fellow coal miner New Hope this week also announced that it would reduce its staff numbers, both at operational and corporate level, following a review process of its Queensland operations.
The staff cuts were not expected to affect New Hope’s output, which had increased by 11% during the three months to April, to 2.7-million tonnes.
