JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Wollongong Coal has awarded a 800 000 t/y run-of-mine coal haulage contract to rail freight company Aurizon.

Aurizon will transport coal from Wollongong’s Wongawilli colliery, in New South Wales, to the Port Kembla coal terminal on the east coast of the state. The contract will run between August this year and August 2018.

Wollongong Coal CEO Milind Oza said in a statement on Monday that the company was “delighted to engage Aurizon. It is another milestone achieved following [our agreement with] Delta SBD to mine and operate Wongawilli for an initial period of two years, to extract around 1.45-million tonnes of coal.”

Aurizon executive VP commercial and strategy Mauro Neves added that the company was pleased to extend its footprint for coal haulage in New South Wales beyond Hunter Valley and the Gunnedah basin.

“We’ve worked closely with Wollongong Coal to provide a flexible and innovative service offering, and in leveraging our capability as largest coal haulage provider,” he noted.
