PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Initial results from a 25 000 m reverse circulation and diamond drilling programme at the Wiluna gold project confirm the potential for openpit mining, owner Blackham Resources has reported.

Blackham told shareholders on Wednesday that drilling had defined mineralisation along strike and beneath existing pits, highlighting the potential for cutbacks at several pits.

While Blackham was still undertaking an update of the resource model at Wiluna, the company said that there was potential for a significant reduction in operating costs if sufficient additional resource could be identified to justify a mill operation.

“The latest Wiluna extensional drilling had demonstrated the potential to add significant baseload openpit mining feed. Updated Wiluna openpit resources are likely to complement the recent drilling success in extending the Bulletin underground mineralisation,” said Blackham MD Bryan Dixon.

“Both feed sources will be integrated into the Wiluna expansion study currently under way.”
