PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Whitehaven has set a new quarterly production record, producing 2.34-million tonnes of saleable coal during the three months to September. This was 44% higher than the previous corresponding period.

Run-of-mine production was up 39% on the previous corresponding period to 2.66-million tonnes. Coal sales for the quarter rose 36% on the previous corresponding quarter to 2.49-million tonnes.

Whitehaven told shareholders on Friday that the significant increase in production was owing to record production rates from the longwall operation at its Narrabri mine, compared with early-stage ramp-up of the longwall during the previous corresponding period.

The Narrabri mine produced 1.36-million tonnes of coal during the quarter under review, following the successful relocation and start-up of the longwall equipment in the second panel at the mine site.

The Tarrawonga mine delivered 539 000 t, Rocglen produced 339 000 t and the Werris Creek mine delivered 420 000 t.

Whitehaven noted that production from the Werris Creek mine was slightly below plan owing to coal loss and quality degradation in the mining areas where the old underground workings were interfacing with the new opencut mining areas.

The expansion project at Werris Creek, which would see production increase to a rate of 2.5-million tonnes a year, was nearing completion. The expansion project would be completed by December.

The miner had also been progressing its Maules Creek project during the quarter, with first coal expected in the first quarter of 2015. The project would cost an estimated A$767-million to develop.
