PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Nickel miner Western Areas has doubled the mineral resource at its Spotted Quoll north zone, and established a maiden underground ore reserve at the sulphide deposit.

The mineral resource at the Spotted Quoll north zone now stood at 11 520 t of nickel classified as indicated, with a further 10 573 t classified as indicated and some 2 367 t classified as inferred.

A maiden reserve of 168 000 t, grading 5.7% nickel, for 9 600 t of contained metal had also been estimated at this deposit.

Western Areas said on Thursday that the ore reserve in the north zone replenished around one year’s low-cost production from the Spotted Quoll mine, extending the mine life beyond its current 10 years.

MD Dan Lougher said that owing to the significantly higher grade of the ore, it would entail a lower cash cost to mine, supporting the already low cost of mining the main lode.

“In addition, access to the northern lode is straightforward, given the decline infrastructure is already established below the north reserve,” he said.

Lougher added that Western Areas was now starting to see reward from its disciplined approach to near-mine exploration, and said that the company was working to update the mineral resource for the Spotted Quoll main lode.
