Project Description
The West Angelas project is part of Rio Tinto’s plans to increase yearly iron-ore production in the Pilbara to 360-million tonnes a year.

The project will expand the mine, which is located about halfway between Newman and Tom Price, in Western Australia, from 29-million tonnes a year up to 35-million tonnes a year.

The expansion is expected to extend the mine’s life by about 13 years.

The project will also require the construction of infrastructure, including new haul and access roads, as well as communications and waste facilities.

The government of Western Australia has approved plans by Rio Tinto to increase production at two of its Pilabara iron-ore operations, including West Angelas.

The West Angelas expansion is expected to create 290 jobs during construction and will increase the ongoing operations workforce at the mine by 200 workers to a total of 1 300.
