Project Description
The concourse modernisation project will be the first set of improvements to come to fruition as part of the Washington Union station’s second century plan.

The plan is a comprehensive improvement initiative comprising multiple projects that aim to triple passenger capacity and double train capacity over the next 20 years.

The Claytor concourse, Union station’s intercity and commuter concourse, will be reconfigured and modernised to double its capacity, adding about 1 858 m2 of new passenger space – nearly doubling the concourse’s current capacity.

The project will include reconstructing and realigning tracks; developing new concourse facilities; improving multimodal transportation services and connectivity; and improving and expanding infrastructure and other supporting facilities.

The project will assist in alleviating congested conditions and enhance passenger comfort and accessibility, while enlivening the space with new architectural finishes and natural light.

In addition to the concourse modernisation, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is planning a new Metrorail staircase and First street entrance to Union station, which Amtrak hopes will improve the passenger experience on the western part of the concourse.
