Name and Location
Walney Extension offshore wind farm project, East Irish Sea, UK.

Client
DONG Energy.

Project Description
The proposed Walney Extension offshore wind farm is an extension to the existing Walney offshore wind farm, in the east Irish Sea, and will cover up to about 149 km2, making it almost twice the size of the existing site.

The project area is located to the west of the current operational wind farm, an estimated 19 km west of Walney Island and 31 km south-east of the Isle of Man. With a potential installed capacity of 660 MW, the proposed wind farm will, in addition to the wind turbines, comprises wind turbines, foundations, interarray cables, offshore and onshore export cables within an ‘export cable corridor’, as well as offshore and onshore substations, which will connect the project to the national grid.

The second phase of the Walney extension offshore wind farm will have a total capacity of 330 MW.

Value
Not stated.

Duration
Based on the formal permits and timetable for the Walney Extension offshore wind farm, offshore construction of the wind farm could potentially start in 2017. However, DONG Energy has not yet taken a final investment decision to build the offshore wind farm.

Latest Developments
DONG Energy has chosen Siemens as preferred supplier for the delivery of its 7 MW wind turbine for the second phase of the Walney Extension offshore wind farm.

Meanwhile, ABB has been awarded an order worth an estimated $130-million by DONG Energy to supply a high-voltage cable system that will bring power from the Walney extension wind park, off the north-west coast of England.

ABB will design, manufacture, supply and commission the 220 kV alternating current extruded cable system.

The link includes more than 157 km of submarine cable to connect the two wind farm platforms to each other and to shore, as well as 24 km of underground cable for the grid connection.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Siemens (wind turbines) and ABB (high-voltage cable system).

On Budget and on Time?
