PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Victorian government has taken the next step towards streamlining assessments and establishing a one-stop shop for environmental assessments with the release of a draft assessment bilateral agreement.

“This new agreement will replace the assessment bilateral agreement currently in place, and will significantly increase the number of projects in Victoria that will be eligible for single assessment,” Environment Minister Greg Hunt said.

“The elimination of unnecessary duplication will boost business, create jobs and help grow the Victorian economy. Importantly, this can be achieved while still protecting the environment.”

The one-stop shop reform will create a single assessment and approval process that satisfies both state and Australian government requirements, reducing the regulatory burden on business by streamlining the environmental assessment and approvals process, while still maintaining high environmental standards.

The introduction of the reform was expected to save Australian businesses around A$420-million nationally every year.
